i'm john veranes, a first generation cuban-russian. i was made in these parts but raised in miami in a glorified trap house. when i turned 17 I moved to New York to pursue music. living out of my car in the beginning, i eventually transferred from a manhattan community college to Columbia University's non-traditional student program, where I double majored in literature and music. during this time i was also head music instructor of the Fund for Conductive Education, a Bronx non-profit school for the developmentally disabled. there I programmed a color-based Max-MSP patch that allowed disabled students to create chord progressions using streamlined accessibility features.
between this time i spent years living in Europe, specifically Berlin, honing my vision and craft, eventually returning for a homecoming tour that turned into a permanent stay and acceptance into the Bard MFA, pursuing my degree in Music / Sound Art, as well as a long collaborative project with Michael Gira involving complex editing/layering and looping.
what I seek most from music and performance is something of an "aural sculpture", a beautiful work in which you can hear and see moving parts, you're aware of its artiffice but also its methodical construction. i wish to make music that––through its materiality, uncanny textures, subtly strange structures, formalist experiments, aesthetic cohesion, live theatricality, transparency and yet maximalist sensation, cosmic bliss yet gothic dreaminess etc.––prompts the dilemma of either dancing or dwelling; or, perhaps, ideally, both at once.
